mission
creating new stages for everyone. everyday and anywhere.
small stage is a platform to share and connect people through dance and music.
we bring artists and audiences together through dance and music works that everyone can enjoy and appreciate.
we engage and encourage innovative works that strive for artistic excellence.
we mix music and technology with dance and movement at its foundation.
vision
Our vision at Small Stage is to contribute to our city and create a future that connects dance and music to the general public in new and interesting ways. Small Stage believes in the power of art + community and is accessible to all audiences, while leveraging technology to create new experiences.
We have three unique strengths:
we bring together Canada’s diverse traditions in dance and music through original cross-cultural collaborations;
we use digital technologies to engage and connect with audiences in new ways; and
we focus on bringing dance into public and non-traditional spaces.
Small Stage identifies and connects artists who share our values of curiosity, risk-taking, cross-cultural expression, and audience engagement. We are proud of our record of mentoring new artists, many of whom go on to realize their ideas generated at Small Stage in other contexts.
values
Create powerful dance experiences using innovative approaches and technologies, to connect dance, audiences and community.
Create outdoor dance events that are accessible to a wide demographic to interact with, in unexpected places and ways.
Reach audiences that are dynamic, diverse and representative of a public not frequently engaged in the arts, especially dance.
Bring together an eclectic mix of dance artists that represent a range of ages and experiences, living in the community.
Build capacity within the sector, both through the incubation of new choreographic work and development of promising artists, artistically and technically.
Facilitate workshops, mentorships, and hands-on residencies, cross-sectoral collaborations and strategic partnerships, designed to build capacity in the dance community/sector.
